At the origins of Basse Goulaine
Basse-Goulaine is a commune in western France, located on the south bank of the Loire, at the gates of the Muscadet-Sèvre et Maine vineyards, 6 kilometers south-east of Nantes. The medieval history of Basse-Goulaine is largely linked to the Château de Goulaine, which was built in the 12th century by the Goulaine family, an ancient noble family from Brittany. The castle was extended and modified several times over the following centuries.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, the region of Basse-Goulaine became an important center for the production of wine, in particular Muscadet.
Today, Basse-Goulaine benefits from strong economic development and is part of the suburbs of Nantes and is therefore included in its urban area. Indeed, with the expansion of Nantes in the 20th century, Basse-Goulaine was gradually integrated into the urban area of this city. The population of Basse-Goulaine has increased in recent decades due to its proximity to Nantes.
