The Origins of Nantes Erdre

Located in the Northeast of Nantes, along the left bank of the Erdre, the Nantes-Erdre district is one of the 11 districts of the city of Nantes. Its name comes from the Erdre river that crosses this district.

The Nantes Erdre district is a composite area, which for a long time was marked by a strong rural identity. In the mid-19th century, the town of Saint-Joseph de Porterie took shape around the church erected in 1846. The territory was then agricultural before becoming exclusively market gardening. The opening of the Nantes-Châteaubriand line in 1877 began the urbanization of the district and encouraged industrial establishment. Peasants then had to learn to coexist with the workers of Batignolles...

Today, the urbanization of the district on agricultural lands continues. 2,250 homes will be built in the Erdre-Porterie sector and since 2013, the district has become a major transport hub of the agglomeration with the opening of the multimodal station "Haluchère-Batignolles". In addition, the district continues its transformation, notably with the Champ-de-Manoeuvre, Erdre Porterie urban projects and the popular Port-Boyer district, whose green spaces are being renovated in consultation with the residents.
