Living in Saint André des Eaux

Saint André des Eaux

The Origins of Saint-André des Eaux

Near the bay of La Baule and southwest of the Brière Regional Natural Park lies the town of Saint-André-des-Eaux, a charming, flower-filled, family-friendly village. It's part of the Guérande-Atlantique Peninsula Agglomeration Community. Nestled between the sea and the Brière, Saint-André-des-Eaux gets its name from its geographical location, between the saltwater of the Atlantic Ocean and the freshwater of the marsh.

The history of Saint-André-des-Eaux traces back to a significant civilization from the Gallo-Roman era that marked the territory. Today, remnants like tiles, bricks, jewelry, amphorae, and the toponymy of villages ending in "ac" like Bilac, Lessac, etc., still exist.

In the 15th century, priests from Guérande founded a parish named Saint-André-lés-Guérande. Although the parish was established, the town itself didn't exist as it was during the feudal era when eight lordships shared the territory. The name Saint-André-des-Eaux first appeared in the early 1750s. During the French Revolution, the Andréanais, being royalists and Catholics, opposed the republican laws. After a tumultuous decade, the residents began to adapt to the new institutions.

In the 18th century, the triangular trade and that of the Indies departing from Nantes boosted the town's growth through the textile industry, introducing new materials like silk and cotton. During World War I, the first American military base was set up in Saint-Nazaire, with part of its contingent stationed in Saint-André-des-Eaux. During the German occupation in World War II, allied bombings heavily impacted Saint-André-des-Eaux. Saint-Nazaire and its surroundings were the last in France to be liberated on May 11, 1945. Between the sea and Brière, today Saint-André-des-Eaux is a lovely place to live.
