Saint Sébastien sur Loire
Vivre au bord de Loire
The origins of Saint-Sébastien sur Loire
Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire is the 5th city of the department, located south of Nantes, on the banks of the Loire. The village was founded between the end of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century. In the second half of the 14th century, Saint Sebastian was mentioned during the great plague epidemics, and the village asserted itself thanks to the protective reputation of its patron.
From the 17th century, the Nantes bourgeoisie decided to build second homes on the coast on the banks of the Loire, which would become follies in the 18th century. The Dacosta, whose members have been advisers, king's secretaries, shipowners or merchants, have their residence and set up a foundry there, an incongruity in this rural and residential complex. If some inhabitants joined the revolutionary movement by following the bourgeoisie, the majority expressed their reluctance from 1791. The village came out ruined. It is reborn and welcomes a hero of the Russian campaign.
A suburb of Nantes from the 19th century, Saint-Sébastien sur Loire was transformed by the great changes caused by technical progress, with the railway, and by the phylloxera crisis, which affected wine production.
After having been an important center of vegetable production in the Nantes conurbation, Saint-Sébastien acquired its first housing estates in the early 1960s.
Today, Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire is a dynamic city that offers a mix of residential areas, parks and services. It retains its strong link with the Loire, with several kilometers of walks along the river, and is renowned for its quality of life.

These former grazing meadows, now converted into a municipal park with walking and playground areas, have kept their beauty intact. An old barn that housed a few cows until the mid-1950s still dominates the site today with its terrace. You will also find Ile Pinette in the extension of Île Forget. However, it is much larger than the latter, since Île Pinette measures 55 hectares.
