La douceur de vivre au bord de l'eau

The Origins of Sucé-sur-Erdre

Located 20 km from Nantes in Loire-Atlantique, Sucé-sur-Erdre is a town in the Erdre Valley.

The first mention of Sucé-sur-Erdre, albeit under a different spelling, appears in a register of the diocese of Quimper in 952. During the second half of the sixth century, the Erdre, which was only a simple stream, was transformed into a navigable waterway by Saint Félix, the Bishop of Nantes.

In the Middle Ages, the village was divided between the domain of the lords of Blain, the Rohans, and that of the Bishops of Nantes, the Régaires. Around 1558, the followers of Calvin settled on the Rohan territory, making the town an important center of the Reformation. Mazoyer de Villesernin, reputed to be the illegitimate son of Henry IV, was sent there with a pacification mission and resided at the Turballière Manor.

The famous philosopher René Descartes (1596-1650) stayed at the Chavagne castle as well as the Bas-Jaille lodge. With the establishment of the Nantes to Brest canal, the town became a popular place for river tourism, earning it the nickname "Pearl of the Erdre". In 1793, the municipality of Sucé was officially established.
